On Saturday, the Cannon Preservation Team gathered at Fort Moultrie for our first official maintenance event — and it was a great success! "Two teams of four volunteers spent the morning cleaning, spot-treating, and re-coating smaller rusted areas on several cannons," said Museum Curator Jessica Bitter. Thanks to their hard work and teamwork, we were able to complete the project in about half a day.

This inaugural effort gave us valuable insight for future planning. Based on the work completed, we anticipate that cleaning and spot-treating days will generally require a half-day commitment, while full waxing projects will likely need a full day.

We do not have upcoming dates scheduled yet, but we are hoping to plan two preservation days in the fall — one for each park. We’ll be debriefing this kickoff event to fine-tune logistics before setting the next dates. Stay tuned for updates!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this first event a success!
